AjaxWindows is a fully fledged internet based operating system that allows you to run a variety of applications from within your web browser. Rather than using your current operating system you can open up a browser window and log into your AjaxWindows desktop. A fairly reasonable 1GB of storage space is provided for free. The Main advantage of AjaxWindows is that you are able to take your files everywhere you go without having to remember to take a USB drive or other form of storage with you. If you’re working in libraries or schools with limited permissions then being able to log into your own desktop might be a real advantage. Also because AjaxWindows is run from within a web browser it is less demanding on your computer, this means that you can run it on much older computers. The only thing that is important is a high speed internet connection.
AjaxWindows was created by Ajax13, Inc, which is a company that was created in 2006. The CEO of Ajax13 is Michael Robertson who is also responsible for creating the very popular Linspire/Lindows operating system. There are plenty of people talking about this application on the internet, although most people don’t understand the point of it.
The idea of a web based operating system is nothing new; in fact there are quite a few competing systems. AjaxWindows does offer some advantages, including 1GB of storage and integration with your popular web based applications out of the box, including Google docs. AjaxWindows also comes with a built in sync utility which makes it really easy to copy files between your AjaxWindows Desktop and your computer. This makes it possible to use AjaxWindows as an extension of your existing computer, rather than simply a replacement.
AjaxWindows has quite an attractive and familiar look, when you first log into AjaxWindows you will probably feel quite comfortable because it looks very similar to Windows. You get a familiar (albeit slightly different) start button, clock, and even a desktop which can be customized. AjaxWindows is one of the easiest web desktop applications to understand. AjaxWindows is fully customizable, which means you can easily change the wallpaper, or move icons round your desktop. However when it comes to using it it’s a different story. The interface is quite clunky and surprisingly slow. Files sometimes take many seconds to actually load. Navigating the start menu can be very frustrating.
Registering for the service is very easy, you simply need to click on the orange “Get an Account” button on the main home page and then fill out your details. You do need an email address in order to register, however no verification is required before you can use your account. When you check your email you will often receive 2 or 3 emails saying that you have signed up for other services. This is because when registering with AjaxWindows it will automatically register you with Zoho, MP3Tunes, and ScheduleWord.
AjaxWindows is a complexly free web based application, you do not have to give any of your payment details to them and personal information is kept to a minimum. The website also doesn’t have any prominent advertising.
This website is ideal for people who want to access all of their files on multiple computers without having to remember to carry USB drives or other forms of removable storage round with them. Few people would actually benefit from using this, and until the technology is improved it is only suitable for early adopters.
